​As an electric device, an EV charging station shall be serviced annually at least for two reasons. First, preventative maintenance helps you ensure the unit is safe for use. Second, maintenance helps to timely detect issues that may arise. Thus, it can significantly reduce unit downtime and repair costs. In short, preventative maintenance may include chargepoint inspection, testing, and cleaning.

Chargepoint inspection

Chargepoint inspection is about a visual examination of an EV charging station. The aim here is to check the unit’s general health. Here, the main tasks are as follows:

• Inspect the casing of the unit, its weather sealing, and all its accessible components
  
• Check the wiring, including the charging wire
  
• Examination of the feeder pillar and its wiring
  
• Check the earth continuity of the unit
  

If you detect any damage or wear and tear issues, do not use the chargepoint until they are fixed and mitigated.

Chargepoint testing

Chargepoint testing refers to specific activities that simulate typical and even some unfriendly weather and operating conditions. Here, the main tasks include:

• Testing installation weatherproofing
• Testing the structural integrity of the unit
• Testing the station in a charging mode
• Testing the station in a standby mode

Testing the EV charger in a standby mode includes checking the voltage on the connector when unplugged. While testing the device in a charging mode is about checking its power input / output and its general running.
If testing finds an issue in general EV charger integrity or its installation weatherproofing, fix the issue immediately. The same is true with testing an EV charger in various modes.

And, yes, do not forget to keep your chargepoint clean. Wipe its casing with a wet cloth at least once a month. After all, there is no pleasure in using a dusty unit.
